Choisir et faire durer une batterie cellule

Dans un camping car, la batterie cellule est un élément clé car il y a de plus en plus d'électronique qui pilote les différents appareils ; parmi eux, le frigo AES, le combiné chauffage/boiler TRUMA etc...
Il importe donc de choisir avec soin sa batterie, puis il faut la faire durer car elle a un coût important.


Choisir sa batterie cellule

Il existe 4 types de batteries :

• les batteries au plomb ouvertes (il faut rajouter de l'eau distillée si nécessaire)
• les batteries AGM (batteries au plomb, mais sans entretien)
• les batteries gel, batterie sans entretien
• les batteries ion lithium, les meilleures batteries et de loin ; sans doute l'avenir mais aujourd'hui a un prix stratosphérique (de l'ordre de 2000/3000 €)

Je conseille une batterie sans entretien  ; comme cela, on n'oublie pas de mettre de l'eau distillée au dessus des plaques quand c'est nécessaire.

La meilleure batterie sans entretien est la batterie gel, mais elle a 3 inconvénients :

• elle est plus chère. Une batterie gel haut de gamme dure 15 ans vaut 2 fois plus cher qu'une batterie AGM qui dure 2 fois moins longtemps (exemple batterie gel Sonnenschein)
• elle est plus sensible aux défauts de charge ; elle nécessite donc une électronique de charge plus élaborée
• elle peut être déchargée moins vite qu'une AGM (cas où on a besoin de beaucoup d'ampères)

Je conseille donc une batterie de type AGM ; son prix pour les modèles entrée de gamme (c'est à dire pas Deep Cycle),  arrive maintenant à la hauteur des batteries au plomb de qualité (comme Banner) sur laquelle elle a 4 avantages :

• elle est sans entretien
• elle résiste mieux au gel (mais moins bien qu'une batterie gel, sans jeu de mots)
• elle peut être chargée plus rapidement (par un courant de pointe idéal de C/4 (C étant la capacité de la batterie) , contre C/5 pour les batteries  au plomb, C/4 pour le Gel et C/2 pour le lithium).
  Cela veut dire qu'une batterie AGM de 200Ah peut être chargée avec une intensité de courant maximum de 200/4=50A ; cette valeur est un idéal pour faire durer la batterie, car on peut charger avec une intensité supérieure au détriment de la durée de vie de la batterie
• elle peut subir sans dommages une décharge de 80 % (au plus) ; dans ce cas on diminue le nombre de cycles. Pour la faire durer il ne faut pas la décharger de plus de 50%, comme pour les batteries GEL (on n'a pas cette contrainte avec le lithium)

Une batterie AGM bas de gamme permet environ 500 cycles de décharge à 50%.

Kesako ? cela veut dire qu'on peut lui prélever 500 fois 50% de sa capacité, à condition de la recharger à 100 % entre 2 cycles

Exemple : si j'ai une batterie de 100 Ah, je peux faire 500 décharges de 50 Ah, après la batterie est morte. 

Cela veut dire que, si vous consommez 50Ah par jour et si vous rechargez bien votre batterie, vous pourrez utiliser votre batterie au plus 500 jours (d'utilisation effective).

Mais il faut qu'entre 2 cycles la batterie soit rechargée à 100 % ; par ailleurs, si on la décharge de plus de 50%, le nombre de cycles diminue, donc sa durée de vie. Si on la décharge moins, c'est l'inverse.



Retenez

• quand on a une batterie AGM ou GEL d'une capacité de 100 Ah, on ne dispose que de 50 Ah utilisables (si on veut la faire durer)
• la durée de vie de la batterie dépend en grande partie de vous : recharge à 100% après chaque décharge
• l'intensité de recharge maxi est de C/4 pour l'AGM et pour le GEL

Enfin, la durée de vie de la batterie est liée à la température extérieure ; des températures au dessus de 35°C réduisent la durée de vie de la batterie quel que soit son type ; la batterie lithium supporte mieux les températures élevées.

Un certain nombre de camping caristes utilisent 2 batteries AGM de 100 Ah montées en parallèle ; pour ma part je conseille une seule batterie de 150 Ah, c'est suffisant si on n'est pas énergivore.

La capacité nécessaire pour la batterie peut être estimée à 3 fois votre consommation quotidienne si on pratique le camping sauvage ; voir mon article : consommation électrique quotidienne d'un camping car.



Ajout Août 2015 : certains camping car neufs sont maintenant équipés de batteries Gel ; c'est une bonne nouvelle, cela prouve que le prix de ce type de batterie baisse. J'attends maintenant le lithium beaucoup plus novateur pour nous...
Je conseille de prendre une batterie AGM pour la batterie moteur, car elle est souvent peu accessible ; ainsi vous ne vous en soucierez plus (mais surtout pas de batterie gel !).

Faire durer sa batterie


On vient de voir que pour qu'une batterie dure elle doit être bien rechargée entre 2 cycles, et pour cela un générateur de courant complémentaire est indispensable. De plus, elle ne doit pas être déchargée de plus de 80 %, sinon sa durée de vie est très courte. L'idéal est de ne pas la décharger à plus de 50% .
Personnellement je ne décharge jamais ma batterie cellule de plus 30% ; c'est possible facilement grâce aux panneaux solaires. Par ailleurs en revenant de voyage, je recharge toujours à 100% ma batterie sur le 220V (cela prend 24H).

Seuls le branchement sur 220V et les panneaux solaires permettent une recharge à 100%.
Pourquoi ? parce qu'ils sont capables de fournir plus de 14 volts, alors que les autres systèmes plafonnent à 13,8V (voir sur le sujet mes articles sur les régulateurs solaires et aussi plus loin avec l'électricité du camping car). C'est le cas de l'alternateur et de la pile à combustible ; les groupes électrogènes le peuvent, mais ont ils vraiment un régulateur de charge intelligent ?

Dans un camping car, la centrale électrique et le régulateur permettent de définir le type de batterie.

Ces différents appareils ont souvent un sélecteur de type de batterie (plomb, AGM, gel) qui permet de respecter la courbe de charge de la batterie afin de bien la recharger et ne pas abréger sa carrière (cas particulier surtout des batteries gel). 

Alors mettez le sélecteur sur la bonne position sur CHACUN de vos générateurs de courant.

Et justement l'intérêt d'une batterie AGM est qu'elle peut être chargée sans dommages (à défaut de réglage spécifique) comme une batterie au plomb ou au Gel, ce qui n'est pas du tout le cas d'une batterie Gel.
Le réglage spécifique AGM permet un courant de recharge plus élevé.

Sur mon Hymer de 2005, il n'y a pas de type AGM, donc par défaut je prends le réglage GEL.

En cas d'absence de sélecteur de type de batterie, il faut pouvoir faire les réglages à la main (paramètres réglables).
A 25°C, les réglages suivants sont conseillés, mais le constructeur de la batterie doit pouvoir vous fournir ces paramètres.

Il convient de noter que ces valeurs varient avec la température.

Il ne faut pas négliger non plus le problème de l'hivernage.
Si l'hiver dans votre région est doux (- 5°C maxi), vous pouvez garder vos batteries AGM (ou gel) dans le véhicule ; il suffit de charger 24 H par mois le camping car sur le 220V pour avoir des batteries bien chargées (perso, je le fais tous les 2 mois sans problèmes apparents).

Si votre véhicule couche dehors et qu'il a des panneaux solaires, vous n'avez rien à faire ; la batterie est toujours bien chargée.
Si l'hiver est plus rigoureux, démonter les batteries pour les mettre chez vous au chaud, et toujours les recharger régulièrement.

Mais attention, il ne faut bas utiliser un chargeur bas de gamme, mais un chargeur avec une fonction de floating (terme Anglais pour dire maintien) ; vous en trouverez des sérieux chez les marques suivantes ; Waeco (Dometic), Victron, Cristec, Mastervolt notamment.
